Description: The Shop of the Crafters, one of the most illustrious Arts & Crafts furniture makers, began making Mission furniture in 1902 under the name of Oskar Onken and Company. Mission furniture, a product of the Arts & Crafts Movement, acquired its name because it was felt by exponents to have a mission - utility of design. By 1904 the company's name had been changed to the Shop of the Crafters to better reflect Arts & Crafts ideals. The words "Shops" and "Crafters" connoted social as well as aesthetic goals. Socially the dignity and fulfillment of the worker was very important. Aesthetically, the design integrity of the simple rectilinear style and the sound craftmanship reflected in exposed construction techniques and unpretentious materials (usually oak), were essential. By 1920 the Arts & Crafts Movement had run its course and its ideals were no longer a reflection of progress. In that year the name of the Cincinnati furniture shop reverted once again to Oscar Onken and Company, and the Shop of the Crafters became history.
