| Description: | The "Underground Railroad" was painted for exhibition at the World's Columbian Fair held in Chicago in 1893. The painting depicts abolitionists helping slaves escape by way of the Underground Railroad to freedom in the North. The period depicted is about 1858 when Levi Coffin, his wife Catherine Coffin, and Hannah Haydock were working together on the Underground system. The landscape is presumably Levi Coffin's farm which was located on the outskirts of Cincinnati and often used to hide escaping slaves. | |
