Description: The 8 foot tall whimsical robot called "Powel Crowsley, Jr.", commissioned by the Cincinnati Art Museum, pays tribute to a prophet of the mass media age: Powel Crosley, Jr. (1886-1961). It is built entirely of Crosley products including TV cabinets, a steering wheel, hubcaps, a refrigerator door, and radio transmission tubes. The video combines clips from a Channel 48 documentary with images from today's popular culture, reflecting the rapid pace of 20th century society. Crosley was born in Walnut Hills in 1886 and from an early age was an inventor, entrepreneur and a saleman. After stints in advertising, auto-building, and many minor inventions, Crosley discovered the infant technology of radio. Crosley became known as the Henry Ford of radio for bringing radio to the masses by introducing the first build-it-yourself radio kits. However, he realized in order for people to want radios they needed to have something to listen to and thus he fonded WLW, the Cincinnati radio station that was heard as far away as the White House. Crosley also made the first car radio, founded WCET, one of America's first public television stations, and build America's first compact car.
